The flexible metal diaphragms allow for accommodation of angular, parallel, and axial misalignment while maintaining precise power transmission. This combination of stiffness and flexibility is particularly valuable in high-speed applications where both alignment accuracy and thermal expansion must be accommodated.

Another major advantage is the coupling's zero backlash operation. Since there are no moving parts in contact, there is no play between the driving and driven components. This results in constant velocity transmission, smooth operation, and reduced vibration, which is crucial for precision machinery and equipment sensitive to torsional vibrations.

Diaphragm couplings are maintenance-free, requiring no lubrication or periodic adjustment. The absence of lubricants eliminates the risk of contamination in clean environments and reduces maintenance costs. This makes them ideal for applications where access is difficult or where equipment must operate for extended periods without shutdown.

The robust construction and use of high-strength materials give diaphragm couplings excellent durability and long service life. The design is relatively simple, with fewer components compared to some other flexible coupling types, which contributes to reliability and ease of installation.

Diaphragm couplings provide good temperature capability, with some designs operating in temperatures ranging from cryogenic to high-temperature applications. They are also suitable for corrosive environments when made from appropriate materials such as stainless steel or special alloys.

Limitations and Design Considerations

Despite their advantages, diaphragm couplings have certain limitations that must be considered during the design and selection process. One limitation is their limited ability to absorb shock loads compared to some other flexible coupling types. While they can accommodate some shock, applications with severe impact loads may require couplings with greater damping capacity, such as elastomeric or grid couplings.

Diaphragm couplings are generally more expensive than some other flexible coupling types, particularly in smaller sizes. However, for high-performance applications, their cost-effectiveness often becomes apparent when considering their long service life, reduced maintenance requirements, and protection of connected equipment.

Another consideration is the potential for fatigue failure of the diaphragms under cyclic loading. While the diaphragms are designed for fatigue resistance, operating conditions that cause frequent and severe deflections can lead to premature failure. Proper selection based on the application's torque, speed, and misalignment requirements is essential to avoid this issue.

Diaphragm couplings may not be suitable for applications requiring very high misalignment capabilities or where large axial movements occur. In such cases, other coupling types with greater flexibility may be more appropriate.
