Detailed Explanation of Various Types of Couplings

2026-05-04 Visits:1

A coupling is an indispensable core component in mechanical transmission systems. It is mainly used to connect two or more shafts to achieve the smooth transmission of power from the driving shaft to the driven shaft, while also protecting equipment and improving operational stability. It is widely applied in various fields such as industrial production, transportation, aerospace, and construction machinery. From the connection between small motors and water pumps to the transmission of large-scale metallurgical equipment and marine power systems, couplings are essential for support.

The core function of a coupling is not merely "connection"; more importantly, it adapts to deviations in the shaft system during operation, cushions vibrations, transmits torque, and protects equipment from damage under special circumstances. In actual operation, due to factors such as manufacturing accuracy, installation errors, equipment wear, and temperature changes, the two connected shafts will inevitably have radial, axial, or angular deviations. The coupling needs to have a certain degree of flexibility to compensate for these deviations, avoid excessive stress in the shaft system, and extend the service life of components such as bearings and shafts. At the same time, for equipment with impact loads, the coupling can buffer impacts through its own structure, reduce vibration transmission, and ensure the stable operation of the entire transmission system.

According to differences in structure and performance, couplings can be divided into two major categories: rigid couplings and flexible couplings. Rigid couplings have a simple structure and low cost, and are suitable for scenarios where the two shafts have high alignment accuracy, no impact, and stable loads. However, they cannot compensate for shaft system deviations, and any deviation will directly transmit stress. Flexible couplings, on the other hand, have the ability to compensate for deviations and buffer vibrations through elastic components or special structures, making them the most widely used type in industry.
